Jim & Michele Wimborough have been cooking in kitchens in the Bay Area (Zut! on Fourth, Grand Café, and Boulevard to name a few) for the past 15 years. It has been their dream to find the perfect small town to open their own restaurant, become part of a community and raise their son, Graham. They feel so fortunate to be able to now call Occidental home—surrounded by all of the bounties of Western Sonoma County. They are committed to using local, seasonal and sustainable produce, meats, and fish to create memorable food & baked goods.
The restaurant space features two wood fired ovens that will be the focus in creating the ever-changing menu. Jim uses his many years of experience working with live fire to make rustic, Mediterranean inspired cuisine. Michele’s expertise and love of pastry lies in making all kinds of sweets including fresh fruit shortcakes, creamy pot de cream, amazing sundaes and a large variety of cookies and cakes. Hazel will also have a kids’ menu, approved by Graham, who has spent a better part of his life around restaurant kitchens.
Hazel is named after Jim's great grandmother. She was a passionate cook and a wonderful hostess. After spending summers in his childhood visiting her, Jim developed a love for cooking and appreciation for generous hospitality. Jim and Michele share a strong desire to continue in this tradition and welcome guests to Hazel as if they were guests in their own home.
